They stood in a small antechamber adjoining the council corridor, a space designed for transit rather than pause, its walls close enough to hold sound without echo and its light calibrated to discourage lingering, and Lucien’s hand rested against the cool edge of a table meant to hold documents temporarily, the stone drawing a steady chill into his palm that grounded him even as the cadence of Corvin’s voice continued without deviation.

The situation was presented as alignment rather than urgency, a recalibration prompted by newly modeled convergence patterns that suggested an elevated probability window, and Lucien absorbed the phrasing through sensation first, the way Corvin’s words seemed to shorten the space between breaths, the explanation repeating itself in slightly altered terms as if the repetition itself could smooth resistance before it formed.
